Transforming Conflict: YSN’s Loretta Ross Discusses the Power of ‘Calling In’ on PBS’ “Amanpour & Co.”

Well known reproductive and human rights activist Loretta Ross, who is currently a YSN visiting associate professor this academic year, was recently interviewed by Michel Martin on PBS’ widely viewed “Amanpour & Co.”  television show.

Ross discussed many of the key concepts in her new book, “Calling In,” which offers a unique strategy for “how to start making change with those you’d rather cancel.”

“I’ve furiously called out enemies,” says Ross in her new book. “I’ve righteously called out friends. I’ve gleefully called out strangers. I even once called out President Barack Obama. My ego sure gets the appeal of putting people on blast, but I also realized a long time ago that running my mouth never did seem to accomplish what I want it to.”

In a wide-ranging 18-minute interview, Ross presents the rationale and advantages of calling people in. “We want people to do more kindness, not less,” Ross says. “You can offer your vulnerability as a way to create good change in the future.” She discusses her belief that the vast majority of Americans are good, kind, and compassionate people, and that we must all find ways to hear and see that goodness, kindness, and compassion when dealing with those with whom we disagree. She also discusses the fact that there are people who can’t and shouldn’t be called in.

Professor Ross is engaging with YSN students and faculty through lectures, workshops, guest lectures and seminars, mentoring students, providing training for faculty that enhances their understanding on best practices for defining and implementing an inclusive, respectful work and learning environment, and working with the YSN faculty to design curriculum modules on human rights and social justice.
