Three faculty members of the Yale School of Nursing (YSN)—Associate Professor Deena Kelly Costa; Associate Professor Soohyun Nam, and Associate Professor Hermine Poghosyan—were recently elected Fellows of the prestigious New York Academy of Medicine. Election to NYAM is highly selective and only extended to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to and substantial impact on healthcare and medicine.
“It is a great honor to have three of our faculty members elected as NYAM Fellows,” said Yale School of Nursing Dean Azita Emami. “Their election is recognition of the quality and global impact of their research.”
The ICU is an area of particular interest for Dr. Deena Costa. She studies the organization and management of critical care, with the goal of improving ICU care delivery, ICU teams, and patient outcomes. She has also published widely on issues relating to nursing workforce policy.
Dr. Nam’s work, published in a number of journals, has focused on defining the impact of sleep, physical activity, and psychocultural influences on type 2 diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases. Dr. Nam takes her research to the affected communities by designing and implementing community-based lifestyle interventions through partnerships with community organizations.
The research conducted by Dr. Poghosyan focuses on cancer epidemiology and survivorship, with a particular concentration on cancer health disparities, and lung cancer screening and tobacco use among cancer survivors and their social network members, including families, friends, and others. Her research provides evidence about the ways in which to maximize the health and well-being of cancer survivors and their family members.

The wide-ranging research interests of all three are reflected in their additional appointments at the Cancer Prevention & Control Program at the Yale Cancer Center and the Cancer Outcomes, Public Policy and Effectiveness Research Center at Yale School of Medicine and Yale Cancer Center (Dr. Poghosyuan); the Section of Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine at Yale School of Medicine (Dr. Costa); and the Yale Institute of Global Health (Dr. Nam).
“Each of these distinguished scholars has advanced our knowledge in areas that are having a substantial impact on patient care now, and that will continue having that impact well into the future,” said Dean Emami.
“Fellowship in the Academy is an honor, given the high level of achievement of the Fellows, and carries the responsibility to become involved in furthering the Academy's mission.”
