Yale School of Nursing Hosts First White Coat Ceremony for Online PMHNP Program

May 17, 2026

The Yale School of Nursing (YSN) held its inaugural White Coat Ceremony for the Online Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) Program on May 17, 2026, marking a milestone for both the School and its first graduating cohort.

The ceremony opened with an acknowledgment of Indigenous peoples and nations who have stewarded the lands and waterways of what is now Connecticut, followed by a moment of silence in recognition of current global events. Deputy Dean Tatiana Sadak welcomed attendees and recognized the significance of celebrating the program’s first cohort, highlighting students’ rigorous academic and clinical preparation as they transition into advanced practice nursing.

Dean Azita Emami addressed graduates, emphasizing the responsibilities and opportunities that come with becoming nurse practitioners. She noted the urgent national need for advanced practice nurses and the impact graduates will have on patient care, health systems, and policy. “You have the opportunity to be compassionate clinicians whose daily practice is grounded in evidence and whose presence alters the trajectory of people’s lives,” she said.

Emami also emphasized the symbolism of the white coat as a commitment to clinical excellence, equity, and service. “Wear this coat as a symbol of your responsibility to science, to compassion, and to one another,” she said.

Program Director Brendan McDonald reflected on the professional transition from student to clinician, underscoring the importance of cultivating resilience, humility, and curiosity in psychiatric mental health practice. Associate Dean of Student Life Erin Morelli led the coat presentation, in which each student was formally cloaked by faculty in recognition of their transition into practice.

The ceremony honored students completing the program this spring as well as those finishing in the summer term, collectively forming the first graduating class of the online PMHNP program.

As the inaugural cohort, the students represent a milestone in the School’s expansion of innovative, accessible graduate nursing education. Their completion of the program reflects Yale School of Nursing’s commitment to preparing nurse practitioners to meet growing mental health needs and advance equitable, patient-centered care.
