The course covers six climate change impact areas: drought, flooding, communicable and vector-borne diseases, extreme heat, hurricanes, and wildfires. The last module contains case studies and other resources to help learners integrate planetary health concepts into their healthcare practice, community health, research, education, and policy and advocacy work. This self-paced multimodal course includes content in audio and visual forms to engage learners according to their interests and needs.
Course Objectives
-
Using the model of Climate Change and Health Impacts (CDC; shown), increase nurses’ understanding of the links between the impacts of climate change and acute and chronic threats to human health. While participants’ baseline understanding of these impacts and health threats may vary, by the end of the course, all participants will be equipped with the fundamental knowledge and tools needed to contribute to greater resilience.
-
Prepare nurses to respond to climate-related health impacts being seen in their current work settings and anticipate how to respond to those expected to impact future work.
-
Using a personal and professional action plan framework, empower nurses to take proactive steps, including in leadership roles, against these climate impacts and build resilience in health systems and communities.
Course Audience
The course is designed for anyone who wants to learn about planetary health and it’s impact on populations, and integrate this knowledge into their healthcare practice, community health, research, education and policy and advocacy work.
