Prerequisites

Four prerequisites are required for admission for all Graduate Entry Prespecialty in Nursing (GEPN) and Master of Nursing (MN) applicants.

Four prerequisite courses are required for admission to the Graduate Entry Prespecialty in Nursing (GEPN) and Master of Nursing (MN) programs.

GEPN: At least two prerequisite courses must be completed, with official transcripts received, by the application deadline. The remaining prerequisites must be completed, with official transcripts received by Yale School of Nursing, no later than August 15 prior to matriculation. A grade of B (3.0) or higher is required in each prerequisite course.

MN: None of the prerequisite courses are required to be completed at the time of application. However, all four prerequisites must be completed, with official transcripts received by Yale School of Nursing, no later than December 15 prior to matriculation. A grade of B (3.0) or higher is required in each prerequisite course.

Prerequisite courses must be completed at an accredited college or university (including community colleges), either in person or online, within eight years of the application deadline. Advanced Placement (AP) credit does not satisfy prerequisite requirements.

What courses am I required to take as prerequisites to apply to the GEPN or MN program? 

The four required prerequisite courses are:
  • Human Anatomy and Physiology I with lab (4 credits). Applicants may instead complete one semester of Human Anatomy with lab as separate courses.
  • Human Anatomy and Physiology II with lab (4 credits). Applicants may instead complete one semester of Human Physiology with lab as separate courses.
  • General Chemistry with lab (4 credits).
  • Microbiology with lab (4 credits).

Please note the following requirements:

  • GEPN: Two of the prerequisite courses must be completed at the time of application, with official transcripts submitted. All four prerequisite courses must be completed, with official transcripts received by Yale School of Nursing, by August 15 prior to the start of the program.
  • MN: None of the prerequisite courses must be completed at the time of application. However, all four prerequisite courses must be completed, with official transcripts received by Yale School of Nursing, by December 15 prior to the start of the program.
  • All prerequisite courses must be taken at an accredited college or university.
  • A grade of B (3.0) or higher is required in each of the four prerequisite courses.
  • Courses may be taken either in person or online.
  • Prerequisite courses must have been completed within eight years of the application submission date.

Can I apply without the prerequisites but take them if admitted? 

GEPN: You must have completed two of the four prerequisite courses at the time of application, with official transcripts submitted. All four prerequisite courses must be completed, with official transcripts received by Yale School of Nursing, by August 15 in the year you begin the program.

MN: You are not required to complete any prerequisite courses at the time of application. However, all four prerequisite courses must be completed, with official transcripts received by Yale School of Nursing, by December 15 before the January (spring) semester in which you begin the program.

Is there a specific or recommended order the prerequisites should be taken in? 

The prerequisites do not need to be taken in a particular order.   
 

Does taking the prerequisites shorten the duration or reduce the number of credits required in the GEPN or MN program? 

No. Prerequisite courses do not formally transfer in to the GEPN or MN program and do not reduce the number of credits required in order to complete it. Prerequisite courses do not substitute for any of the coursework required in the GEPN or MN program.
