Elyse Borsuk

With profound sadness, Yale School of Nursing (YSN) shares the news of the passing of Elyse Borsuk ’90 MSN, CPNP-PC, APRN, a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner specialty faculty member.

Professor Borsuk died suddenly on March 31 due to a severe acute illness.

“Elyse served the YSN community for many years as an esteemed colleague, thoughtful mentor, and enthusiastic alumna,” said Dean Azita Emami, PhD, MSN, BSN, RNT, RN, FAAN. “As a preceptor liaison for her specialty, she helped guide the next generation of pediatric nurses through both clinical expertise and compassionate care. Her abrupt passing leaves a void that will be deeply felt by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.”

Throughout the school, Professor Borsuk’s students admired her guidance, wisdom, home baked goods, and genuine care for their growth and development. Her academic colleagues cherished her kindness, camaraderie, and unwavering support.

During Nurses Week in 2023, Professor Borsuk answered the question: What is the hardest part about being a nurse and why is it worth it anyway?

She responded, “The hardest part about being a nurse sometimes is separating our professional life from our personal lives. As a nurse we are often the first person who works with families assessing their care, being an educator, following up with the patient and families and coordinating care for those children with complex medical issues. It is hard not to become invested in our patients and not worry about then at the end of the day. On the other hand, I wouldn’t have it any other way. As a PNP and being fortunate to have worked in my current practice for almost 25 years I have seen that impact of the care I have offered in that now I am seeing the children of some of the patients that I had the privilege to care for.”

The YSN community’s thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Professor Borsuk’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. The school plans to host a celebration of life to honor Professor Borsuk’s memory at a later date. YSN students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to draw on supportive resources shared via email by the Office of the Deputy Dean and the Office of Student Life.
