Therese Binfon

Nurse Educator Cardiovascular Institute of Detroit Medical Center, Detroit, Michigan.

In 2001, Therese came to the US as an international student from Cameroon, West Africa. In 2004, she graduated from Oakland Community College with an associate’s degree in Science. While in nursing school at the University of South Carolina Upstate, she was busy with numerous extracurricular activities in different capacities, including secretary and president of the International Student Association, delegate and president delegate of the Model United Nations, and International Student Tutor. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) in 2007, and received the Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges award in 2008.

Therese worked as a bedside nurse in Medical Surgical Unit, Trauma, Cardio- Thoracic, Surgical, Ortho, Neuro, Cardiac, and Vascular Critical Care Units (ICU) in varying capacities. In 2011, she went back to school at the University of West Georgia, and in 2013 she graduated with a master’s degree in Nursing, with concentration in Nursing Education (MSN).

In her career as a nurse, Therese has worked as a registered nurse at Duke University Hospital and Grady Health System. At Grady, Therese also worked as a clinical instructor and Clinical Improvement Specialist, in which capacity she analyzed hospital performance metrics and worked closely with different service groups to improve patient care services and outcomes. She conducted focus and cumulative quality reviews for individual physicians and service groups. She prepared analyses and reports for program certification and recertification mandated by healthcare reporting bodies, such as the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).

As a nursing faculty with Kaplan University, Therese taught Pharmacology, Medical Surgical I, Medical Surgical III, Pediatric, Mental Health, and Capstone in Nursing courses. She is passionate about nursing education, ongoing professional development, and continuous improvement in the healthcare field. As a nursing faculty, she was a member/committee member in the Georgia Association of Nurse Educators (GANE) from 2011 till 2015. Currently, she works as a Clinical Nurse Educator in a Cardiovascular Institute, covering Cardio-Thoracic/Vascular ICU, Cardio Progressive Units, and Cardiac Catherization Laboratory (Cath Lab).

She has been a member of Gamma Beta Phi Association since 2005, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing since 2012, the American Association of Critical-Care since 2012, and Phi Kappa Phi honor society since 2013.

Her passion is to facilitate autonomy in nursing through nursing education. Besides working as a nurse, she volunteers her time in tutoring and mentoring nursing students and encouraging them to follow their dreams in the nursing career. In her spare time, she loves to volunteer. She is a dedicated member of the Cameroon Catholic Women’s Association, whose motto is “TO SERVE AND NOT TO BE SERVED”. She is also a registered volunteer member in the Solanus Casey Center in Detroit Michigan. Therese lives in Michigan with her husband and four children.
