Student Information

The global field experiences offered by the Office of Global Affairs and Planetary Health enables MSN specialty students to learn first-hand about global and planetary health. Students will have the opportunity to develop interprofessional healthcare relationships, explore different cultures and become globally educated and culturally knowledgeable registered nurses and nurse researchers.

Classes

Students are expected to enroll in two required seminar courses: NURS3230 offered in the spring semester of your first-year specialty and NURS3240 offered in the fall semester of second-year specialty.

Students interested in the Midwifery experience in Uganda are expected to enroll in the 15-week midwifery seminar in addition to the pre-requisite NURS6230 and NURS6240.

Anticipated dates of travel – the actual dates vary every year. Please consult with the faculty lead or the Office of Global Affairs and Planetary Health
 
  • Tokyo, Japan – Spring: Mar 8 to Mar 16 (1 week)
  • Kumasi, Ghana – Summer: Jun 26 to Jul 13 (2.5 weeks)
  • Accra, Ghana – Summer: Jun 26 to Jul 13 (2.5 weeks)
  • Atiak, Uganda – Summer: Jun 26 to Jul 21 (4 weeks)
  • Panama City, Panama – Summer: Jun 26 to Jul 13 (2.5 weeks)
  • Sukadena, Indonesia – Summer: Jun 26 to Jul 13 (2.5 weeks)
  • Farafangana, Madagascar – Summer: Jun 26 to Jul 13 (2.5 weeks)
 

Cost

Costs vary based on the location and length of your clinical experience. The estimated total cost will range between $6500 and $8000. A detailed breakdown of estimated costs is provided in Global Field Experience Partnerships.
 
We try our best to largely subsidize student travel costs. Details about OGAPH financial support will be given after students enroll in the global health track. All remaining costs are out-of-pocket and cannot be factored into financial aid.
 

How Do You Begin Your Application?

Application process for our clinical field experience is conducted through the Global health track. The Global health track application is due in November of your first year MSN specialty.

Complete and submit your application

Your application should contain:

a.     Statement of your personal goals and interest in the global health track 

b.     Which global health pathway do you choose to pursue your field experience, and why.

4.

The Track coordinator will let you know if you have been approved to join the Global Health Track

OGAPH will work with the track coordinator, faculty leaders and give details about the specific clinical sites based on the global health pathway

Prepare to Travel

Complete all the items on the checklist on e-value. 

  • Log in with your Yale Net ID and password
  • Required documents to review/complete/upload include:
    • Passport (Current for at least six months beyond your planned return date)
    • Visa and travel authorization
    • Yale ISOS and travel insurance
    • Pre departure orientation
    • Health and vaccination records
    • Yale travel registration and travel tracker
    • Travel self-assessment
