Rear Admiral Sylvia Trent-Adams Ph.D., R.N., F.A.A.N.

Rear Admiral Sylvia Trent-Adams became the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health (PDASH) in January 2019. From 2015 through 2018, Dr. Trent-Adams served as Deputy Surgeon General of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. As Deputy Surgeon General, RADM Trent-Adams was a trusted and critical advisor to the Surgeon General, helping support on a variety of critical issues, including efforts to combat the opioid crisis and the operations of the Commissioned Corps.

RADM Trent-Adams has held several leadership positions in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), working to improve access to care for poor and underserved communities. As both a clinician and administrator, she has had a direct impact on building systems of care to improve public health for marginalized populations domestically and internationally.

RADM Trent-Adams received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Hampton University, a Master of Science in Nursing and Health Policy from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Public Policy from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Trent-Adams is the recipient of numerous awards, including the International Red Cross Florence Nightingale Medal.
