YSN Covid-19 Response: Policies and Decisions

April 3, 2020

Information is updating regularly, so watch your emails, and check your eValue home page and the Yale COVID information page. Keep your spirits up in this dynamic time. We are in this together.

Clinicals

GEPN Students: Didactic courses are scheduled to be delivered in an online format at the same time per the schedule. As of Friday, March 27, 2020, ALL clinical experiences are suspended for GEPN students until further notice. Clinical hours will be virtual until further notice. (Please refer to the email you received on March 27, 2020 from Dean Kurth)

Clinical Hours to sit for NCELX: You will have enough hours to sit for NCLEX. The total number of hours required to sit for NCLEX will remain the same. Thus, it is critical that you complete ALL of the online/virtual hours assigned for your clinical courses. Please check Canvas sites and E-value. (Please refer to the email you received on 3.19.2020 from Tish Knobf)

MSN Students: Didactic courses are scheduled to be delivered in an online formatat the same time per the schedule. As of Friday, March 27, 2020, ALL clinical experiences are suspended for all first- and second-year specialty students until further notice.

Clinical Hours to sit for certification exams: Be very clear on ANCC requirements for your particular certification. ANCC requires at least 500 hours and various forms. Most professors will be able to sign the required forms in late April to early May with transcripts indicating courses are ‘In Progress’ for the spring semester.  You will not be able to schedule for the exam until ANCC receives a transcript showing all courses as completed with grades which will be at the close of grades for the semester. You can send in your application prior to the grades being assigned, but you will not be able to schedule the exam until all coursework for the program is completed. You will get your paperwork done before you are actually done with the program, but despite this, you won’t be able to move ahead until you have all courses with grades on your transcript.

YSN Building

To minimize the risk of spreading the virus, as of Wednesday, March 17, the YSN building is closed. Business operations continue as normal with staff working remotely. Please refer to Dean Kurth’s email sent on March 15.

Accommodations

The directors and chairs are discussing how we might provide accommodations for students, but each case is different and should be discussed with the specialty director.

Spring 2020 Grades

On March 25, we announced Pass / Fail grades would be applied for all students and in all spring courses. This is still true; however, to clarify this decision, Pass / Fail grades will only be applied to those courses initiated in spring of 2020. Any course that started in the fall semester will be recorded as a formal letter grade. Spring grades recorded on transcripts as Pass / Fail will have a message on the transcript: “Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, mandatory Pass/Fail grading was in effect for all students for the spring 2020 semester.”

Principles on Holistic Admission and Spring 2020 Grades

March 26, 2020

Recognizing the challenges to teaching and learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Provost and Deans of Yale University adopted the following principle:

Yale’s admissions offices for graduate and professional schools evaluate applicants holistically and will take the significant disruptions of COVID-19 into account when reviewing students’ transcripts and other admissions materials relating to Spring 2020. In particular, we will respect decisions regarding the adoption of Credit/Fail and other grading options during this unprecedented period, whether they are made by institutions or by individual students.
