Specialty Director, Midwifery Education Program

The Yale University School of Nursing (nursing.yale.edu) invites applications from (and nominations of) highly qualified candidates for a ladder faculty position (clinical-track or traditional track) as Specialty Director of the Midwifery Education Program. The SD will be appointed at the Assistant, Associate, or Full-Professor level and will contribute to teaching, service, practice, and research at the Yale School of Nursing.

The mission of the Yale School of Nursing is “better health for all people.” As the first U.S. university-based nursing school, the Yale School of Nursing has long been an innovator and leader in education, practice, and research.  The Midwifery Program, established in 1953, is currently ranked #2 in the U.S. Our graduate entry pre-specialty in nursing (GEPN), nurse practitioner, nurse-midwifery, DNP, and PhD programs draw top quality students from around the globe. Faculty research covers a wide array of topics. Come join our vibrant Midwifery and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner faculty who are eager to collaborate on research, practice, and teaching. We prioritize community, fellowship, and shared endeavor and our collaborative faculty practice (the nation’s longest continuously running practice) supports our learners and provides care throughout New Haven and Fairfield County.

The Midwifery program prepares master’s midwifery students as strong clinicians to be leaders in the midwifery community.  The SD will have oversight of the educational program, will work in partnership with the Specialty Director of the Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner Program, and may have teaching assignments in both programs. Maintaining current clinical experience as a certified nurse-midwife (CNM) is required. As a member of the faculty, the SD will report to the Chair of the MSN Program.

The SD is also responsible for oversight of the specialty curriculum and assuring it aligns with national accreditation agency standards. In concert with the specialty faculty, the SD develops, maintains, and evaluates the curriculum to assure it meets the highest standard of content and delivery. The SD works to help assure student placements in community clinical sites and preceptors alongside the clinical support unit. The SD holds regular meetings with midwifery and women’s health faculty throughout the year to address academic and student issues.  The SD participates and collaborates with faculty and administrators to execute the Yale School of Nursing strategic plan. The SD is responsive to student experience and priorities.

The Yale School of Nursing is committed to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community that encourages a positive culture and operational resilience. The ideal SD candidate will have commitment to and demonstrated skill in enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion and will support faculty and students in didactic and clinical environments. Creative, innovative, thinking that embraces a diversity of thought and an openness to new ideas are desired qualities.
