Yale leaders awarded Master of Arts, privatim degrees to more than 90 members of the university community during a ceremony at Yale Law School’s Levinson Auditorium on March 4.
The M.A., privatim is an honorary master’s degree granted to Yale faculty members promoted to full professor, senior officers of the university, or Yale Corporation members who have earned their advanced degrees at an institution other than Yale.
Among those receiving M.A. privatim degrees during this year’s ceremony were two deans who joined the Yale community in the past year, José García-León, from the Yale School of Music, and Megan Ranney, from Yale School of Public Health. (Yale School of Nursing Dean Azita Emami also received a degree but was unable to attend the event.)
A tradition since 1902, the degree is conferred by the president following approval by Yale’s board of trustees, known formally as the Yale Corporation.
The ceremony and reception were hosted by Peter Salovey, Yale’s president, and Kimberly Goff-Crews, the secretary and vice president for university life at Yale.
