Yale Nurses Lead, Present at Nursing Science Conference

Today Yale School of Nursing (YSN) is sponsoring, leading, and presenting at the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science (CANS) advanced methods conference: “Inclusion by Design: Methods and Approaches Advancing Diversity, Equity, Inclusivity, and Accessibility in Nursing Research.”

Beatrice Renfield Term Professor of Nursing Dr. Nancy S. Redeker, PhD, RN, FAHA, FAAN chairs the CANS national advisory committee, and this is the second consecutive summit under her leadership to focus on how the power of nursing science can address pressing issues that are also areas of focus for YSN. CANS examined equity research in 2020 and the environment and health in 2019.

Redeker collaborated with multiple YSN affiliates to present a poster and recorded talk on “Community-Engaged Research with Mixed Methods: Promoting Sleep Health among Families Living in Racially and Ethnically Diverse Urban Communities.” Co-Chair of the PhD program and Co-Director of Graduate Studies and the PhD program Dr. Lois S. Sadler’79 MSN, PhD, RN, FAAN; post-doctoral researcher Dr. Eileen Condon ’12 MSN, ’18 PhD, APRN, FNP-BC; Associate Professor of Nursing Dr. Monica Ordway ’97 MSN, ’11 PhD, APRN, PNP-BC; and Associate Professor of Nursing and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Specialty Director Dr. Alison Moriarty Daley ’94 MSN, PhD, APRN, PPCNP-BC, FAAN

Multiple students are presenting their research as well. PhD student Shuyuan Huang will present her e-poster on “Challenges of Recruiting and Retaining Postpartum and Young Mothers into Lifestyle Interventions.” Huang collaborated with Professor of Nursing Dr. Robin Whittemore, PhD, APRN, FAAN, Associate Professor of Nursing Dr. Soohyun Nam, PhD, APRN, ANP-BC, FAHA, and Dr. Erin McMahon, CNM, EdD.

Serena Flaherty ’99 B.A., ’06 MSN, will share her poster titled “A Mixed Methods Design to Examine Parenting Among Former Adolescent Mothers.” Flaherty’s coauthors include Sadler; 

Co-Chair of the PhD program and Co-Director of Graduate Studies and the PhD program Dr. M. Tish Knobf ’82 MSN, PhD, RN, FAAN; Associate Dean for Global Affairs & Planetary Health Dr. LaRon Nelson, PhD, RN, FNP, FNAP, FAAN; Associate Research Scientist Margaret Holland, PhD, MPH, MS; and Professor of Clinical Child Psychology Dr. Arietta Slade, PhD. 

Uzoji Nwanaji-Enwerem will present her work in collaboration with with Dr. Redeker and Dr. Theddeus Iheanacho, MBBS, DTM&H: “Measuring Intersectional Stigma Among Individuals on Medication for Opioid Use Disorder: Challenges and Opportunities.” 

According to the CANS conference website, participants will learn about the different types of methods, designs, and frameworks and their applications in nursing science to incorporate diversity, health equity, inclusivity, and accessibility in all aspects of the research process.
